I listen to a lot of musical theatre, and one of my favorite songs that I would listen to during tough times in life has been “You Will Be Found” from the musical Dear Evan Hansen. It is the final song in Act I of the show. It has so much meaning in my life that I got a tattoo on my forearm of that phrase. Though it would be considered to be a secular song it does have a lot of elements that Christians can apply to themselves, especially during times of uncertainty, and when they feel alone in life.
This is a song I play and sing to myself when I feel alone and it gives me hope in dark times. The context of the song as it pertains to the show is that the main character, Evan Hansen, gives a speech at his school as a tribute for his friend Connor, who committed suicide. The students at the school organized a memorial service in honor of Connor, when Evan gave his speech. The speech is given at the beginning of the song. Someone records it and posts it online. This speech was about loneliness and finding hope in dark times and was really relatable to people who struggle with lonely thoughts in life. The song starts off with Evan giving his speech. Then afterwards, the audience and character in the show is told through dialogue that it was recorded and posted online, and it went viral, getting hundreds of thousands of views. This song is a combination of music and dialogue.
In the chorus, it says,
“Even when the dark comes crashing through,
When you need a friend to carry you
And when you’re broken on the ground
You will be found”
This means that through dark times in life, you are not alone when facing your battles or going through trials in life. No matter what, in life you will be found. You can have that and hold on to that hope throughout your life. After that set of verses in the song, this is the second half of the chorus:
“So when the sun comes streaming in
‘Cause you’ll reach up and you’ll rise again
If you only look around
You will be found”
This is a very encouraging message for me and it paints a picture in my head of a person pulling back the curtains of a dark room revealing the sun. You can again find hope in that you will be found. This also gives light to encourage others to give voice to their struggles and to not suffer in silence. You do not have to suffer in silence. Reach out to people who will listen to what you are going through and can understand you.

Christian Elements/Topics
Although again this is a secular song, there are many elements or topics discussed within this song that a Christian can apply to their lives when getting through hard times.
1: You are NOT alone in life
“And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20, NLT)
This verse was said by Jesus to His disciples after the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-19). This is a reassurance to Jesus disciples and it can be a reminder to us today that Jesus will always be with us, no matter what we face in life.
2: We can turn to God when we need help in life
The lyrics:
Maybe there’s a reason to believe you’ll be okay
‘Cause when you don’t feel strong enough to stand
You can reach, reach out your hand
And oh, someone will come running
And I know, they’ll take you home.
Bible verse: “When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.”-Isaiah 43:2
When going through tough times, no matter what it may be, you can reach out your hand to God, and He will help you get through it. In the song, it says “someone will come running.” God will be running to help you when you cannot get through it on your own. We were not meant to go through life alone and when you have the God inside of you, He will guide us throughout life and whatever life may throw at us. He did not promise trial and setbacks would not happen (we all go through them), but God did promise that He would be with us through the trials we may face.
3: Let light into your life
“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.” -1 John 1:5
“For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” -2 Corinthians 4:6
The entire chorus of this song discusses this concept with lyrics such as “Even when the dark comes crashing through…” and “Let the sun come streaming in ‘cause you’ll reach up and rise again.” No matter what, you have the light of God in your heart and you can rely on that light to shine through in your life and it will take over the darkness, like a lamp when turned on in a dark room.
Know that God loves you and I love you and no matter what you face in life, you are strong enough to overcome it and have this as a reminder that YOU WILL BE FOUND in life and you are not alone! If any of you need to talk or someone to listen to you, please reach out and I will try to listen and understand you and help you through your dark times. But have this hope: “Even when the dark comes crashing through, when you need a friend to carry you, and when you’re broken on the ground, YOU WILL BE FOUND!”
